JAKARTA, Sept. 7 (JDN.id) – Incumbent President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has officially appointed businessman Erick Thohir as the head of his campaign team for the 2019 presidential election on Friday.
“The head of the national campaign team is Erick Tohir,” Jokowi said in a press statement.
Meanwhile, Vice President Jusuf Kalla became the Chairperson of the Jokowi-Ma’ruf Amin Winning Team Steering Committee.
Jokowi said he has put the trust on Thohir as the influential businessman has proven his ability especially when he became the Chairman of INASGOC in the biggest sports event in Asia.
“It’s been a long time that I trust Erick Tohir, not only in Asian Games but in other events as well,” Jokowi added.
Jokowi hopes Thohir will be able to represent youth generation.
“Combination of old and young generations, there are professionals, politicians, entrepreneurs. It is not only about politic but also management team so it can work well,” he said.
Thohir cofounded Mahaka group in 1992. The 48-year-old recently served as the chairman of the Indonesia Asian Games 2018 Organizing Committee (INASGOC).
Indonesia will hold the first ever simultaneous general and presidential elections on April 17 next year. Voters will elect president and lawmakers on the same day.
The official presidential and vice presidential candidates will be announced by the General Elections Commission (KPU) on September 20. The campaign period will kick of on Sept. 23 this year and ends on Apr. 13, 2019.
