JAKARTA, Aug.31 (JDN.id) – Indonesia has lobbied Japan as the host of Olympic 2020 to make pencak silat an exhibition sport at the world’s biggest multi-sports event, Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi said on Friday.
“We have spoken to Japanese Sports minister for pencak silat to become an exhibition sport at Tokyo 2020 Olympic,” the minister said as reported by Kompas TV.
Previously Syafruddin, chef de mission of Indonesian contingent to Asian Games 2018 said the government of Indonesia is proposing the country’s traditional martial art to be an official Asian Games sport as well as world’s Olympic.
According to Nahrawi, Indonesia has been lobbying the Philippines who will be the host of 2019 Sea Games, to set pencak silat as an official sport in the Southeast Asian countries’ multi-sports event.
Indonesia secured 14 gold medals from pencak silat in the 18th Asian Games. The achievement helps the host country to be in the fourth place of the ongoing Games’ medal tally.
It surpassed Iran’s previous position. Iran plans to lodge official protest to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) regarding the acceptance of pencak silat in this year’s Asian Games.
