JAKARTA, Aug.29 (JDN.id) – President Joko Widodo congratulated Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday for the success of seizing 14 gold medals from pencak silat in 2018 Asian Games.
“Congratulations to my best friend, Mr. Prabowo Subianto as the chairman of Indonesia’s Pencak Silat Association (IPSI) who succeeded in making the sport the top of Asian Games,” Widodo said after witnessing pencak silat finals in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Of the 16 events contested, Indonesian athletes grabbed 14 golds and one bronze.
“Athletes and coaches have shown their struggle to make Indonesia famous in the sports world ,” the president said.
A special moment happened after Hanifan Yudani Kusumah who won gold in men’s D class 55-60-kilogram went to VVIP seats with Indonesian flag and asked President Widodo and Prabowo Subianto to be hugged together. When he hugged the two prominent figures, their bodies were covered in the national flag.
The warm moment between the two presidential candidates for next year’s election went viral and became a trending topic in social media since Wednesday afternoon.
Through the vlog program made after the medal ceremony, President Widodo and Prabowo Subianto commented briefly on all the struggles of the athletes and a number of moments that occurred.
“Everything is for Indonesia,” said Widodo. Prabowo Subianto echoed the sentiment.
“Pencak silat as a traditional sport Indonesia, it should be a tool to unite the nation,” the winning athlete, Kusumah, said.
Kusumah’s action was spontaneous amidst the heated situation prior to 2019 presidential election. Supporters of both Widodo and Subianto’s have been attacking each others especially through social media platforms.
