JAKARTA, Aug.26 (JDN.id) – Qatar won its first two gold medals in Asian Games 2018 on Sunday in Jakarta.
Abdalelah Hassan broke the zero gold situation by presenting one gold from men’s sprint 400-meter division. He won against M. Anas Yahiya from India who came second and Ali Khamis of Bahrain in third place at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.
Hassan became the third athlete in Qatar history to win the men’s 400m division at the Asian Games. His two senior compatriots who won gold medals in the same event are Ibrahim Ismail Muftah, in 1994 and Femi Ogunode in 2010.
“I love Indonesia. This is the first time for me coming here and I got gold,” Hassan told JDN.id after his win.
The second gold for Qatar in this year’s Asian Games came from Ashraf Elseify in athletics’ men’s hammer throw who recorded 76.88 meter.
Elseify becomes Qatar’s second athlete who won gold from an athletics field event at Asia’s Olympic. His senior Mutaz Essa Barshim won the men’s high jump in Asian Games 2010 and 2014.
Qatar also earned a silver medal from men’s sprinter 100-meter, contributed by Tosin Ogunode.
