JAKARTA, Aug.21 (JDN.id) – Indonesia bagged its fifth gold in Asian Games 2018 after weightlifter Eko Yuli Irawan took first place in the men’s 62 kilograms on Tuesday at JIEXpo Kemayoran, Jakarta.
Irawan lifted a total of 311 kilogram – 141 kilogram from snatch lifting and 170 kilogram from clean-and-jerk.
“My victory is for Indonesia,” the 29-year-old gold medalist from Lampung said. Irawan was seen to be in tears when Indonesia’s national anthem was played in the medal ceremony.
Silver medal went to Vietnamese weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh and Uzbekistan’s Adkhamjon Ergashev secured third place.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo witnessed the competition.
“Yesterday, Tiara Andini Prastika and Khoiful Mukhib contributed two gold medals from men’s and women’s downhill cycling division. Today, weightlifter Eko Yuli Irawan added one more gold from men’s 62 kilograms weightlifting,” the president twitted on Tuesday.
Irawan had been expected to win gold for Indonesia, said Syafruddin, chef de mission of Indonesian contingent to Asian Games 2018.
“Eko Yuli Irawan’s victory keeps Indonesia on its track to be in the top 10 medalists at Asian Games 2018,” Syafruddin said in a statement.
