JAKARTA, Aug 17 (JDN.id) – Former Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, popularly known as Ahok, is most likely to finish his jail term by January next year after receiving a sentence reduction, an Indonesia’s government official said on Friday.
Ahok was among 102,976 inmates from all over Indonesian prisons granted Independence Day’s clemency this year, ranging from one to maximum six months, Justice and Human Rights Ministry said in a statement released on Thursday night.
This year, 2,200 prisoners enjoy their early release due to the sentence remissions.
“He gets two months of sentence reduction and is to be released by January next year,” Ade Kusmanto, a spokesman of the ministry’s penitentiary department told JDN.id on Friday.
Ahok was sentenced to two-year behind bars due to blasphemy by Jakarta district court in May last year.
Indonesian government gives sentence remissions to inmates during major holidays such as religious holidays and Independence Day.
