JAKARTA, Aug. 13 (JDN.id) – Chef de Mission of Indonesia’s contingent to Asian Games 2018, Comr. Gen. Syafruddin hopes athletics will be able to contribute five gold medals in the Asia’s biggest Olympic.
“As much they can achieve. If it is possible (we expect) five gold medals,” he said in a visit during an athletics training session at Madya Stadium at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in South Jakarta on Saturday.
“I look forward to Lalu Muhammad Zohri’s promise (to win gold medal), I hope he is not only a champion abroad but also in his own country,” Syafruddin added.
Accompanied by a number of athletes, including the 100-meter world junior sprinter champion, Syafruddin tested the jogging track while encouraging athletes to perform well at the event.
“This stadium also meets international standards…Now it’s a matter of how we can take advantage of this momentum so that our athletes will be over the top,” he said.
Athletics is a flagship sport and has been part of the competition since the first Asian Games. This year, a total of 48 gold medals from 24 numbers for men, 23 numbers for girls, and one mixed number will be awarded to.
The 2018 Asian Games will take place in Jakarta and Palembang in South Sumatra from Aug.18 to Sept. 2. Athletes will be competing for 462 gold medals from 40 sports.
Twenty-five country leaders are expected to attend the opening ceremony.
