JAKARTA, July 26 (JDN.id) – Police have arrested an 18-year-old male suspect, for the brutal raping of an Indonesia’s exchange student in her home on Herman Bavinckstraat in Rotterdam last weekend, an Indonesian official said on Thursday.
“On Wednesday (25/7) the Indonesian embassy in The Hague has received a notification from the Dutch Police that an 18-year-old man has been arrested as a suspect,” Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection from Foreign Ministry, Lalu Muhammad Iqbal said in statement.
He said the embassy provides assistance for the victim’s family and coordinates with local authorities.
“The victim’s brother and father are already in Rotterdam to accompany her,” he said while saying representatives of the embassy remain in Rotterdam to anticipate if the victims / families need support.
Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has communicated with her Dutch counterpart Stef Blok on Wednesday in order to express concerns over the incident.
“She requested that this incident should be given a special attention to ensure the perpetrator will get harsh punishment,” Iqbal said.
According to Iqbal, Minister Blok said that the Dutch people were taken aback by this incident. He expressed their deepest sympathy to the victims and their families.
Blok also ensured that the Dutch Police would do their best to handle the case.
