JAKARTA, July 22 (JDN.id) – A police firearm exploded at Indonesia’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, in Tangerang, Banten on Sunday morning, injuring one on-duty officer. The operation at the airport remains normal.
The incident took place at around 6 a.m. local time at Terminal 3 when a police officer from protocol unit Brigadier Galuh Apriyana emptied a Glock pistol that belongs to another officer Brigadier Fajar Firmansyah at a check-in counter of national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia.
click “Apiryana wanted to help (send the pistol to) Firmasyah, who has boarded the plane. It (the pistol) should have been checked in a special place to empty it, not at the check-in counter,” Febri Toga Simatupang, the airport’s senior branch communication and legal officer told JDN.id.
Apriyana did not realise that a bullet was still inside the gun. “The firearm was facing the floor when it exploded. An officer was mildly injured due to the pieces from the ricochet,” he explained further.
“We urge airlines ground handling (officers) if there is any protocol officer or institution who carries a firearm and wants to empty it, they should be directed to the special room for that purpose,” Simatupang said in a statement.
