JAKARTA, July 22 (JDN.id) – Indonesia’s Beringin Karya, or Berkarya Party held a national briefing on Sunday in Sentul, West Java, for its legislator candidates who will compete in 2019 elections.
The new political party was established in 2016 by Hutomo Mandala Putra, also known as Tommy Soeharto, the youngest son of Indonesia’s second president Soeharto. He is also the chairman of the party.
The briefing aims to unite the candidates’ views on the party’s goals and to make a winning strategy for the election, according to the chairman.
“As a new-born political party, Berkarya has a task to delegate its cadres to sit in the legislative posts,” Tommy said.
He reiterated that Berkarya does not want to live in the past glory but has willingness to do the best for the nation like during the era of late president Soeharto.
Suharto stepped down from his 32-year presidency in May 1998, following massive students demonstrations across Indonesia, triggered by Asia’s economic crisis.
“All political party is required to pass 4 percent electoral threshold in the next year legislative elections. Berkarya has to work for it,” Tommy said.
Berkarya has registered 575 legislative candidates to the National Elections Commission (KPU) for 80 offices – the House of Representatives and the Regional Legislative Council (DPRD).
All of Tommy’s siblings are now with Berkarya, including his elder sister Siti Hediati Hariyadi, known as Titiek Soeharto, who left Golkar Party’s top position to join her brother’s political party.
