JAKARTA, June 27 (JDN.id) – Simultaneous regional elections kicked off in Indonesia on Wednesday with tens of millions registered voters cast ballots across the nation.
Indonesia is home to around 260 millions people and has transitioned into a democracy country since the fall of former President Suharto in 1998.
The elections are to vote for new leaders in 171 regions including provincial, municipal, and regency levels.
Polling stations opened for around five hours starting from 8 am (0100 GMT).
Elections at gubernatorial level will be held in North Sumatra, Riau, South Sumatra, Lampung, West Java, Central Java, East Java, West Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Maluku, Maluku, and Papua.
Previously nine candidates for governor, mayor and regent have been declared suspects by anti-graft agency KPK and most are now under the agency custody.
