JAKARTA, June 14 (JDN.id) – Muslim in Indonesia will celebrate Eid al-Fitr this year on Friday, Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin said on Thursday as the result of ulemas and government officials meeting to watch the appearance of the crescent moon or hilal.
“All participants of the meeting have agreed that 1st Shawwal 1439 Hijri will be on Friday, June 15,” the minister said, referring to the tenth month of Islamic calendar.
The meeting was broadcasted nationwide from the Religious Affairs Ministry in Central Jakarta.
Millions of Indonesian Muslims have been on their exodus period to their hometowns, known as mudik, to celebrate the Eid the family. Mudik is the nation’s annual tradition during the Eid.
The celebration is also to rejoice the passing of Ramadan, which all Muslim are obligated to fasting.
Some Indonesians who are affiliated with Naqsabandiyah congregation, mostly in West Sumatra, have celebrated the Eid on Wednesday.
